01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked into the shopping street of Kitamachi in Nerima Ward, Nanatsuboshi is an unpretentious drinking den that caters directly to serious pub-goers. While settling in with a chilled giant mug of Sapporo Black Label, the natural first order is the signature senbero sashimi platter. Remarkably lavish for its modest price point, the assortment showcases notably fresh fish, led by naturally sweet red shrimp that instantly prompt another sip. Adding the adult luxury matsumae-zuke—a marinated kelp and squid mix enriched with red shrimp and seasoned salmon roe—brings a toothsome crunch and deep umami that sets the pace for the evening.
As small plates cover the table, moving into the hot dishes creates an easygoing drinking rhythm. The salt-simmered beef tripe delivers clean, restorative depth, while simpler comfort fare like pub-style ham and eggs or blistered red wieners brings nostalgic izakaya charm. Drinks to match include the bracing Mitsukan ponzu sour, with its lingering tartness, and a self-pour Japanese sake tasting flight.
Toward the end of the evening, keep an eye out for the fried rice served during later hours. Generously topped with sirloin and flavored with sweet-savory sauce and robust garlic, it possesses enough character to rekindle an appetite even when you feel nearly full. Handled skillfully by the owner, a night sharing drinks with good company here easily justifies the effort of reserving a table.
